Save Our Spire

Wateringbury ChurchSt John the Baptist Church Wateringbury is visited by thousands of people every year, and hosts a whole range of activities including social events for the elderly, youth activities and events, fetes and festivals, musical and drama performances, civic memorials as well as baptisms, weddings, funerals and Church services. It is a venue for dozens of organisations. Now our 700 year old Church needs to have its spire re-clad to keep it fit for all who benefit from it.

Please see for a fascinating bird’s eye view of the spire.

We need to have the shingles (wooden tiles) replaced before structural damage is caused by water ingress, woodpeckers and boring insects which would obviously have serious financial implications. Initial estimates suggest the cost may be in the region of £65000.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to our appeal so far. We have made great progress from personal donations, grant applications, and a generous promise of £21,000 from the Friends of Wateringbury Church. Subject to your continued help and further successful grant applications we aim to commission the work mid 2017. We will be asking the architect to draw up a detailed specification so we can obtain up-to-date quotes and availability from specialist firms.  Oak shingles will be used as these have a life-span is expected to significantly outlast that of cedar.

So please help the village church reach its target.
